Despite the intrusion of COVID19, we're working hard to keep the project live, and in April the team are linking up online with the young people to keep developing the project. The final show may see the light of day a little later than originally planned... but it will be the stronger and better for it!
Stay safe, take care.
DESTINIES: A new project creating a theatre and music production celebrating the stories and creativity of young refugees and asylum seekers living in Derbyshire has received support from Arts Council England. Destinies brings together Derbyshire Virtual School, Ava Hunt Theatre and Sinfonia Viva working in partnership with national producer Orchestras Live.
Unaccompanied young refugees, asylum seekers and children in care from across Derbyshire are working alongside professional artists in a series of workshops and rehearsals focussing on creative input into the script, staging, songs and compositions. They will also be engaging in the wide range of roles and skills required to stage a performance, giving them insight and experience of cultural sector careers.
In a pilot project, young participants have been creating initial ideas by writing poetry, short stories, songs, music, raps and movement sequences created together with professional theatre makers Ava Hunt Theatre, composer Raph Clarkson, and musicians from Sinfonia Viva.
DESTINIES is being co-produced and supported by Orchestras Live through its partnership with Derbyshire County Council, with additional support from Derby Theatre. The intention is to secure further support to enable a tour of the finished piece to schools and venues across the East Midlands.
